Jamila Robinson, a senior editor at The Philadelphia Inquirer, will be the next editor-in-chief of food magazine Bon Appétit.
Condé Nast, publisher of Bon Appétit and other magazines such as Vogue and Vanity Fair, announced Monday that Ms. Robinson, in her new role, will be responsible for all content and strategy for food brand and recipe site Epicurious.
Ms. Robinson is the Associate Editorial Director of Food and Culture The Enquirerwhich she joined in 2020. Previously, she was managing editor at Atlantic Media and also worked for the USA Today Network, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, and The Detroit Free Press. Ms. Robinson most recently served as Chair of the James Beard Foundation’s Press Awards Committee and chaired the annual list of the World’s 50 Best Restaurants.
Anna Wintour, Chief Content Officer at Condé Nast and Global Managing Editor of Vogue, described Ms. Robinson in a statement as a “community builder and editorial talent” as well as an “absolute star in the kitchen”.
In a statement on Monday, Ms Robinson said she was thrilled to be joining Bon Appétit and Epicurious.
“For me, food is an art form that cuts across every part of life and connects communities,” she said. “This role is an exciting new chapter in my commitment to building a taller table and showing the world that food culture is accessible to everyone.”
Ms. Robinson replaces Dawn Davis, a veteran of the book publishing world who was appointed in 2020 to take over the reins of Bon Appétit while it grappled with criticism of the treatment of people of color who worked there. The publication’s longtime editor, Adam Rapoport, abruptly resigned in June 2020, after an old photo surfaced online showing him in a racially insensitive outfit.
Mrs. Davis announced several months ago that she was leaving Bon Appétit to rejoin Simon & Schuster.
Ms. Robinson will start work on September 18th.
